NounGnarversary Success

Huge shoutout to all the teams and community members who participated in the NounGnarversary events that took place, the events looked like a blast! Gnars HD are LIVE

Gami, Ilustradora, and Volky have delivered Gnars HD and they are nothing short of amazing. Want to see your Gnars in HD? Head to gnars.wtf/gnar/[Gnar ID] and select the HD toggle shown below the image of your Gnar. Just like in the animation shown below, you’ll see your Gnar upgraded to HD in the blink of an eye! GNARS’ly Video Part by Haris Housos

The first video part funded by a DAO has been dropped through the Gnars Media House and is available to mint! Huge shoutout to Knowhow92 for all his time and effort put into this part. It has been in the works for quite some time now so it’s really great to see this come to fruition. Check out his announcement here or head directly to the mint page to collect yours today!

Infinite Prop House Round

Our first infinite Prop House round parameters have been updated with a lower quorum and extended voting period to allow Gnars holders more time to vote on their favorite submissions. If you’re just getting caught up, winners of this round will receive 0.20 ETH for them to produce custom boards with their design, and winning designs will also be produced and given to Gnars-sponsored shredder Tom Rohrer who will ride the boards on his channel which has garnered millions of views! That’s Gnarly Community Shop

$NOGS for Gnars

With the recent launch of NNS’s Social Staking program and the $NOGS token, we will begin to see more creative ways to earn $NOGS around the nouniverse. From this point forward, proposal activity including submitting proposals and voting on them will earn you $NOGS tokens on the Polygon network. Gnars x ThePASS

ThePASS is a DAO platform that has built a custom dashboard for Gnars! The dashboard shows a variety of insights such as news feeds from social media, treasury analytics, governance updates, and more. Check out the Gnars dashboard here or the announcement on Twitter.

Nouns HD Have Gone Multichain

Nouns HD was a huge success and sold out on Zora in about a week. Fortunately for those of you who missed it, the mint was such a success it has also been expanded with an additional mint on Base. Want to grab yours? Head over to Zora or Mint.fun. To spice things up a bit, Gami is even offering 0.42069 ETH to the lowest unique holder after the mint concludes. Not quite sure what this means? Here is his explanation of how the winner will be selected.

Nouns, but Uglier

Our very own Brett (formerly Pinpusher) has launched a beautifully ugly collection of Nouns on Zora! After the initial mint was botted and sold out very quickly, he relaunched with a larger supply on Zora so everyone has a chance to snag a few. Check out the announcement on Twitter.

Infinite Prop House Round

Our first infinite Prop House round is live and open for proposals with custom skateboard deck concept art! Winners will receive 0.20 ETH for the artist to produce custom boards with their design, and winning designs will also be produced and given to Gnars sponsored shredder Tom Rohrer who will ride the boards on his channel which has garnered millions of views! Check out the round on Prop House here.

Unfortunately, some really gnarly deck designs became stale after not reaching the vote threshold within 7 days of being posted. As proposals are required to reach the threshold within this time period to win, it is crucial that we as a DAO try our best to regularly pay attention to these designs as they come in.

NounGnarversary Prop House Winners

Congratulations to all of the winners in the NounGnarversary Prop House round! We are stoked to see how you all celebrate the Nouniversary in August. We’ve even already seen the completion of another set of noggles ‘opstacles’ for one of the events! Winning proposals can be found on the Prop House page for the round, and individual threads for each winning proposal have been created for discussion in the Discord forum.

NounGnarversary Prop House Round

Last call to get your votes in for the NounGnarversary Prop House Round! With so many great submissions, please take your time reading through them all before voting, but don’t procrastinate! Voting ends at 9:00pm EST tonight (1:00am UTC) which is just over 7 hours from now. There is also a temporary forum in the discord for the discussion of each proposal if you have any questions. Can’t wait to see the results and all of the awesome events next month, good luck to all!

Frontend and Protocol Updates

Gnars is now a fully-fledged Nounish DAO! We have migrated 70% of the treasury to an onchain DAO executor with the other 30% and Gnars NFTs for onboarding remaining in our multisig. Onchain proposals will be automatically executed and can be found at gnars.wtf/dao. Offchain proposals will continue to utilize the Snapshot space that we have been using to date. The final front-end updates have also been rolled out! Check out Gami’s twitter thread here for more details on what those changes included. And of course a huge thank you to Volky for his incredibly thoughtful work on all of these updates.

Settle.wtf is Live

Huge thanks to @0xMulf for his work on adapting Lil Block Party for Gnars! You can now visit Settle.wtf to see a preview of what the next Gnar will look like if settled during the current block. If you’ve ever had a desire for a specific head or style, keep your eyes out for them to pop up and be quick to settle or that Gnar might disappear forever!

Frontend and Protocol Updates

Volky has been hard at work on all sorts of gnarly updates! The first ones you may have already noticed on the website: a counter with the number of auctions until the next Gnarving, current auction duration, and a link to settle.wtf to pick the next Gnar. Soon you’ll see proposals and governance within our frontend app rather than having to navigate to Snapshot. Along with these final app updates we will be transitioning to a fully on-chain DAO and migrating the treasury away from our current Safe and Reality setup. [1] [2]

Alternative Minting on That’s Gnarly

That’s Gnarly has been updated with alternate methods for minting to help save you money on gas fees! You can now mint editions using credit card or with MATIC/ETH on Polygon and completely avoid the gas costs of minting on Ethereum mainnet.

Gnars on a Layer 2 Network?

We’re currently exploring the possibility of migrating some of our operations from the Ethereum mainnet to a Layer 2 network such as Polygon, Arbitrum, or Optimism. This move has the potential to enhance accessibility of That’s Gnarly drops, Gnars auctions, and reduce overall transaction costs for the community. We value everyone’s opinion and would like to hear from you regarding which network you believe would be the best fit, if any. Your feedback and insights are invaluable to us so please hop in our discord and share your thoughts!

FOMO Gnars / Gnars Block Party anyone?

Some of you may have heard about FOMO Nouns, the game we play every day on the Noun O’Clock show hosted by The Noun Square, or Lil Block Party over at Lil Nouns. These awesome tools show a preview of what the next NFT to be minted would look like if the auction was settled at that time. We want to hear what creative name ideas you come up with for a Gnars version! Check out the thread on twitter or drop your thoughts in discord!

That’s Gnarly Updates

Drops on That’s Gnarly will now be open to mint for a full week. With the increase in gas as of late, the hope is that this provides a more accessible minting experience. Whether you happen to be away from the computer for a day or gas is prohibitively expensive, this change should provide more people the ability to mint these gnarly editions. The Collective team has also deployed upgraded contracts! These revised contracts should also see significant gas savings. In addition, as mentioned above That’s Gnarly is also considering moving to an L2. Again, we really want to hear thoughts and feedback from the community!

Skate Cuida x That’s Gnarly

Auction Extensions

As mentioned over the past month or so, protocol upgrades are continuing to be pushed out as they are completed. Last week we saw an update to the frontend for the website at gnars.wtf along with the ability to claim two v2 Gnars per OG Gnar. This week, we have a beginning for auction extensions and a bittersweet end to auction sniping. As many of you already know not having auction extensions led to users competing to get their bids in at the last second, which we called sniping, and led to some great times in the auctions channel. With the introduction of auction extensions, this will no longer be the case, as when a higher bid is received in the final seconds of an auction it will automatically extend the duration of the auction.

That’s Gnarly Contests

Gnars are a new way to fund extreme athletes

We prefer a world where kids aren't sold energy drinks by their heroes. So as a community of action sports enthusiasts, we've formed a DAO to rethink how extreme athletes get sponsored.

Gnars are NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain

Based on Nouns open source and CC0 artwork, they're stored fully on-chain with no external dependencies. Each one gets you a DAO vote and memberships are available at auction, forever.

Updates and OG Claim are Live!

The first of the upgrades we’ve been talking about have gone live at gnars.wtf. You’ll now see an updated interface along with a revamped playground! Another thing you may notice is the ‘Claim’ button in the top menu. This is where you can go to claim 2 free (plus gas) v2 Gnars for each OG Gnar you own. Read more in the announcement below and then head to the Claim page here.

Prop House is Coming

The Gnars Prop House has been created and soon enough we’ll be hosting our own funding rounds! Check it out here. Prop House is an awesome tool that will allow us to set funding amounts for each round and then allow proposers to submit their ideas over a period of time. Once submissions close, voting begins and Gnars holders get to vote on the proposals to select winners.

Remember to Vote!

Keeping up with proposals can be a challenge, but it’s important we all try to participate in every vote we can so I just wanted to drop a little reminder to everyone to stay up to date on our Snapshot to vote on Gnars proposals, and Federation to vote on Nouns proposals with our delegated Nouns. Federation is a cross-DAO governance platform that simplifies the process of a DAO participating in another DAO’s governance. If you ever have questions about voting, please don’t hesitate to ask in our discord.

Gnarving Update

As you can see, the protocol upgrades I’ve been referring to are starting to be rolled out, and the last changes will be coming with the next gnarving, so be sure to keep up with us every week to catch any announcements! For those that don’t know, the gnarving is when the duration of each auction doubles - think of it like a Bitcoin halving but for Gnars auctions - and this time the auction duration is going to increase from 40 to 80 minutes. At the time of this writing, there are 109 auctions left. Interested in learning more about how our auctions work? Head over to onboard.wtf.

We’ve officially got the first drop on That’s Gnarly from the legendary Bob Burnquist. Having someone this influential participating in the platform so early on is truly amazing to see. The gnarving is when the duration of each auction doubles, think of it like e Bitcoin halving but for Gnars auctions, and this time the auction duration is going to increase from 40 to 80 minutes. At the time of this writing, there are 138 auctions left. And don’t forget, the next gnarving will also mark the beginning of auction extensions and the end of sniping! That’s Gnarly Continues to Deliver

We’ve got a couple updates to That’s Gnarly this week. Most importantly, the introduction of user submitted initiatives! Do you have an organization, charity, or other initiative you’d like to support with portions of your revenue as a creator on the platform? Well now anyone can submit an organization to be included as an option for creators to send a percentage of their revenue to. In addition to initiatives, there have been overhauls to the creator and visionary profile pages. Head over to your profile and check it out!

Even More Updates for That’s Gnarly

The Collective team has added collector profile pages where you can see how many editions a collector owns, how many athletes they’ve supported, their current voting power on the platform, and scroll their collection. Check out the screenshot from my profile below! They also updated the creations page to display submissions in an infinite scrolling UI rather than a grid. Another awesome new feature is shown in the top left, and highlights the number of athletes onboarded, how many collectors have supported athletes, and the total revenue generated by the platform since launch. With nearly 900 visionaries and over $7,000 raised in the first month, it’s safe to say ThatsGnar.ly has been a resounding success so far.

Noun 189 Skateboards are here!

Noun 189 head skateboards are now available on skateboard.wtf! Currently shipping costs are prohibitively expensive outside of the United States, but Gami is working on a solution to make these boards available worldwide. If you’re outside the US and interested, be sure to let him know.

Gas has been very high this week so we didn’t see many auctions get settled, but the gnarving continues to inch closer. The gnarving is when the duration of each auction doubles, and this time the auction duration is going to increase from 40 to 80 minutes. At the time of this writing, there are 185 auctions left. Royalties are here!

With the recent passing of Proposal 51 the DAO has signaled a desire to implement royalties on secondary markets to earn additional revenue to the DAO’s treasury. As of February 8, the 4.20% royalties are in effect on OpenSea, and on-chain registries will be updated shortly. All revenue from royalties will be sent to the DAO at gnars.eth. Huge thanks to Gnarley-Quinn and Gami for getting this done!

As we work through changes to our governance structure, processes, and onboarding flow you’ll start to notice some changes in our Discord. If you’re in there regularly I’m sure you’ve seen that we’ve already begun making changes to channels! We are hoping to simplify things but also want to be sure we incorporate feedback from the community, so if you have any comments or concerns about changes being made please ping a board member!

ETHDenver Event

If you haven’t noticed yet, the proposal for the ETHDenver Lounge/co-working space has passed! If you’re going to be in Denver for the event, be sure to get in touch with Pin Pusher and Vlad. The event details can be found in the poster below. Shirt orders have been placed and the first live artist has been booked so don’t miss out if you’re in town. DAO Goals and Structure

On Wednesday a community call was held to review our goals and governance structure moving forward into 2023. If you missed it, a recording will be posted to our Gnarly Drive as soon as it is available. You can also review the slideshow prepared by Gami here. It is crucial that we incorporate comments and feedback from as much of the community as possible, so if you have thoughts or ideas about what the DAO should focus on and how it should operate please share them in the Discord!

Gnarving Coming Soon

Brace yourselves, just over 200 auctions left until the next gnarving! The gnarving is when the duration of each auction doubles, and this time the auction time is going increase from 40 to 80 minutes. Interested in learning more about how our auctions work? Head over to onboard.wtf.

That’s Gnarly Drops

The submissions on thatsgnar.ly continue to wow us all, this truly is a revolutionary way to highlight the creativity of extreme athletes. Gnars are stoked to be pushing the envelope every day! We’re minting a new open edition every single day at Gnar O’ Clock (9:30pm EST / 2:30am UTC) and trust me, you don’t want to miss them. This past week we had an extra special drop. Gnars athlete Will Dias’ submission was selected as the top submission for the first weekly 1/1 auction! His clip is a series of him doing tricks on these sick noggles. Watch it on thatsgnar.ly!

Upcoming Gnars Upgrades

There is an active proposal for some pretty major protocol upgrades that everyone should be ready for. The most important one is a significant change to the way Gnars auctions function. To date, we have not had auction extensions, which is great on one hand because it has given us the opportunity for some fun times in the #🔨┥auctions channel sniping each other (iykyk). But on the other, it encourages people to wait until the last second and bid the minimum they think will win. So when the next gnarving occurs in approximately 260 auctions, expect there to be extensions on the auctions if you bid in the final minutes! (If you aren’t aware, gnarvings are the auction mechanic where the length of each Gnars auction doubles after every 1000 minutes.)

There will additionally be some frontend upgrades that will include new features like a gnarving countdown timer, updated UIs for voting and delegation, NNS (.⌐◨-◨) name resolution, and more. As well as a variety of backend upgrades such as hosts, various refactoring and optimizations, and a migration away from our current Safe/Snapshot setup to DAO executor.

The thatsgnar.ly platform MVP has been live for nearly a week now! Vlad’s ‘Ode to Mark Gonzalez’ was voted as the first open edition to be minted on the platform and brought in 1.08 ETH! This is an additional 0.54 ETH deposited into the treasury and marks the beginning of a new era for Gnars DAO. We will continue exploring alternate streams of revenue and decentralized content curation by the community. This is just the beginning of the Revolution! That’s Gnarly is LIVE!

The thatsgnar.ly platform MVP is live and the first curated mint has just gone live! Vlad’s ‘Ode to Mark Gonzalez’ has been voted as the first open edition to be minted on the platform. Check out the video here and mint an edition for only 0.0069 ETH! While it’s still quite early for the platform, this is only just the beginning of the Gnars media revolution!

First Gnars Droposal!

Between now and the time that the next edition of Gnarly News comes out, minting for the first Gnars ‘droposal’ will go live! Inspired by Nouns Proposal 190, this will be the first NFT open edition launched by Gnars DAO via proposal. In addition to That’s Gnarly, this is a fantastic method the DAO is exploring for proliferating content and creating additional revenue for the DAO. There’s been a bit of controversy over the This Is Nouns video minting after some “alpha groups” picked up on it and people expected some sort of reveal of a PFP. Toady has been very proactive in managing the madness and has been able to work out a Prop House round for the proliferation of the video!

Gnars are a new way to fund extreme athletes

We prefer a world where kids aren't sold energy drinks by their heroes. So as a community of action sports enthusiasts, we've formed a DAO to rethink how extreme athletes get sponsored.

Gnars are NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain

Based on Nouns open source and CC0 artwork, they're stored fully on-chain with no external dependencies. Each one gets you a DAO vote and memberships are available at auction, forever.

Gami has outlined some goals and ambitions he has for the DAO for 2023 and it’s safe to say that he’s hit the nail on the head as always. We have a handful of key items to continue working on and new projects to start moving into 2023. Check out the complete thoughts he shared here.

The thatsgnar.ly platform is undergoing continuous work by the collective team along with Gnars. The platform is in its early stages but is already showing great promise. There are a lot of details to work out but we are confident that it will be the perfect first implementation of the Revolution protocol.

- This is the first “Droposal” coming from Gnars DAO! Inspired by Nouns Proposal 190, this photo will be released as a Timed Open Edition for a price of 0.015 ETH for a period of 7 days. Proceeds will be split between Gnars DAO, Kevin Kowalski (skater pictured), and Tim Aguilar (photographer).

- This proposal comes from web-gnar, one of the founders of SkateHive. They have created a game that gets about 100 plays per day and is featured on GX Games homepage, called Quest for Stoken. This proposal requests to cover the costs to port the game for web and iOS platforms to expand its reach and incorporate Gnars characters, in-game POAPs, and more prizes down the road.

- These three are professional skiers based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. They are part of a street skiing crew called Child Labor, and have just passed their proposal to create over 20 minutes of edited videos along with 120+ clips that can be used in other Gnars content.
